Saturday we attended the absolutely coolest and most meaningful wedding ceremony I've ever been to, except it wasn't a wedding. Because marriage is not open to everyone, our friends chose to call the day "A Ceremony to Celebrate Our Journey." And it wasn't just a ploy for stuff either, because they asked that if people really wanted to give something, that they donate to a worthy cause.
The chairs were arranged in a spiral, and Jeff and Ashley came in together (actually they also both greeted everyone at the door as we came in). The spiral arrangement allowed them to see every guest as they walked in, and we could all see them. Then at the end we all joined hands and sang "Traveling Companions" as we filed out through the spiral to end up surrounding the room in a big circle. I missed a good portion of the ceremony as DeBoy was not a bit interested in being still or quiet, but I could sort of see and hear what was going on from the foyer.
Here's the explanation for the spiral. "The Chairs are arranged today in a spiral. The spiral offers a winding path, representing the journey that we travel through life, alongside all of you. The spiral also reflects the circularity of life and the deepening connections of love, friendship and Grace that we continue to discover as we move through life's journey."
Instead of a guest book they had a photo album. Everyone was asked to fill out a card with a special memory about Jeff and Ashley.
The reception was a veritable feast of vegetarian-friendly fare, all made with locally grown food. The flowers were giant pots of mums that were grown at a local farm. (And at the end everyone who wanted one was asked to take one. We got a pretty purple one.) It was a reunion of sorts for us, as we have in common many friends. And many many kids! The Queen 
was in her element.
